Remembering the Lord Warden : British Railways' pioneering car ferry

Hendy, John F.2016
Books, Manuscripts
Looking at the vibrant ferry industry of today, it is difficult to believe that the seasonally operated, pioneering 'floating garages' of the immediate post-war era ever paid their way. Built by the famous Denny Yard at Dumbarton in 1952, the Lord Warden epitomised the re-berth of Dovers ferry industry but was gradually eclipsed by the developing roll-on era of the mid-60s. Downgraded to Irish Sea routes at the end of her career, the industry that she had helped to create had simply overtaken her and she was sold in 1979 to Saudi Arabian interests. John Hendy tells the year-by-year story of this remarkable pioneering ship in his new, fully illustrated book.
