Al Pacino stars as Eli Wurman, a worldly and experienced publicist who has spent a long and successful career smoothing over the public lives of rich, famous and extremely powerful people. When Cary Launer (Ryan O'Neal), a famous actor, calls Eli to ask him to discreetly remove a small problem from his life in the shape of a young starlet, Jilli (Téa Leoni), it looks set to be all in a day's work... until the affair leads to a crime that shocks Eli to the core, involving some of the most powerful and influential people in the country.
